Motivation
The SGSMA PhD Thesis Competition aims to recognize researchers who have completed their PhD thesis in the past 2 years and can demonstrate the significance and relevance of their research to the SGSMA community. We invite recent and soon-to-be graduates of PhD programs to participate in the prestigious Ph.D. Dissertation Competition at SGSMA 2026.
Areas of Research: The aim is highlighting dissertations that advance the state of the art in synchronized measurements and analytics for smart grids. Relevant topics are outlined in the Call for Papers.
Who can apply? Applicants may be scholars who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis in the last 2 years (not earlier than January 1, 2024) and those who will defend their Ph.D. dissertation by the start of the conference (not later than May 31, 2026), on topics mentioned above. Finalists must be registered at SGSMA 2026.
Competition Criteria
The SGSMA Thesis Competition focuses on the Areas of Research mentioned above. Candidates submit a summary of their doctoral thesis, evaluated on clarity, scientific rigor, and effective dissemination to a power system engineering audience while answering:
- What is the contribution of the work to the state of the art?
- What is the impact of the work (societal and others)?
- What is the degree of innovation and the technology readiness level (if applicable)?
- What are the short-term and long-term plans/potential for deployment?
Competition Process & Submission Guidelines
The complete requirements and evaluation flow are listed in the two stages below. The competition is conducted under a strict double-blind review process.

2-Page PDF via Google Forms
Google Forms — Submit here forms.gle/yEdCNaYoteqgo4Fi8- Cover letter (max 1 page): date of thesis defense, thesis title, number of published peer-reviewed journal papers and journal titles (without identifying characteristics), number of peer-reviewed conference papers and conference names (without identifying characteristics), number of first authorships.
- PhD Thesis Abstract (max 1 page): include problem statements, objectives, novelty, methods, key results, and advances to the state of the art.

Finalists of the first stage will be invited to present at the conference. All finalists benefit from a student registration package waiver (no travel support provided).

In-Person Presentation & Panel Scoring
- Slide deck: max 5 slides, max 5-minute presentation.
- The presentation should extend or complement points from Stage 1 abstract.
- The number of published journal and conference papers, venues, and first authorships must be included in the last slide.
- Do not include identifying characteristics.
- Q&A (5 minutes) and panel scoring after all finalist presentations.
Inconsistencies, violations of the strict double-blind review process, or unethical behavior at any stage lead to immediate disqualification.
